Historical Biogeography

چکیده
Historical biogeography can be divided into two subdisciplines: taxon biogeography and area biogeography. In the former we are interested in reconstructing the geographic distribution history of a particular group of organisms. Questions we may be interested in answering include: Where did the organisms originate? How did they colonize the areas in which they live today? When did they first come to a particular area? How prone to dispersal is the lineage? In area biogeography, the focus is on general phenomena that affect many groups of organisms. Typical research questions include: How was a particular community assembled? What is the explanation of commonly observed disjunct distributions? What are the most important geographic dispersal barriers that affect or affected the distributions of organisms in a particular region of the world? Are differences in species diversity between two regions best explained by differential speciation or differential extinction?

Historical biogeography: A review of its basic concepts and critical issues
Biogeography (the study of the geographical distribution of organisms) ranges from descriptive to interpretative studies. Interpretative biogeography developed two research traditions named historical and ecological biogeography, respectively. The main difference between these research traditions is the time-scale one. The objective of this paper is to summarize the current state of historical ...
متن کاملHistorical biogeography, ecology and species richness.
Ecology and historical (phylogeny-based) biogeography have much to offer one another, but exchanges between these fields have been limited. Historical biogeography has become narrowly focused on using phylogenies to discover the history of geological connections among regions. Conversely, ecologists often ignore historical biogeography, even when its input can be crucial. Both historical biogeo...
متن کاملPhylogeny and historical biogeography of trans-Andean cichlid fishes (Teleostei: Cichlidae)
We reconstruct the historical biogeography of cichlid fishes endemic to the trans-Andean region of NW South America. DNA sequences were used to study historical biogeography of the cichlid genera Andinoacara (Cichlasomatini) and Mesoheros (Heroini). Two eventbased methodological approaches, parsimony-based Statistical Dispersal-Vicariance Analysis (S-DIVA) and likelihood-based DispersalExtincti...
متن کاملperspective: Why biogeography matters: historical biogeography vs. phylogeography and community phylogenetics for inferring ecological and evolutionary processes
Phylogenetic and phylogeographic approaches have become widespread in evolutionary biology, ecology, and biogeography. However, analyses that incorporate inferences from historical biogeography (e.g. timing of colonization of a region) may be essential to answer the most important large-scale questions in these fields, but they remain infrequently used. I focus on two examples here. First, I ar...
